What to Stop and Start Doing for Higher Conversions on Upwork Proposals

If you're a freelancer struggling to convert your proposals into gigs, I will give you the first part of the exact formula that my students and I use daily.

This is the number one thing that you can stop doing immediately.

Stop talking about yourself.

I see this repeatedly on almost every Fiverr profile and every audit I do on Upwork accounts.

The proposals and the profile description are always… ME, ME, ME

If you want to see higher conversions on your Upwork proposals, you will want to flip that mindset right around into…

What you can deliver to the client

The very first sentence in any proposal (or any profile description) you create going forward should be—

This is the exact example of what the first sentence in my proposal looks like:

This is completely client-centric and lets them know that I am all about helping them

  • Grow their business

  • Expand their exposure

  • Increase their revenue

There are some more easy things you can do to keep your proposals centered on your client’s needs:

  1. Look at their reviews. Is a name listed? If so, address them by this in your proposal.

  2. Check to see if there is a business name/website. Mention that you looked at their website and think their project is unique and will offer great value to their target market.

  3. Clearly identify their problem in your proposal.

  4. Clearly and concisely tell them how your skills can solve their problem.

  5. Share a couple of short testimonials from your past clients.

  6. End with a call-to-action, like hopping on a call or meeting.

A lot more detail goes into writing an effective Upwork proposal. These are just some quick tips to get you started, so you know what to stop doing and what to start doing to get those higher conversions on your proposals.
